The Striking Bezel Setting
Posted on: February 12th, 2010
If you are looking for engagement rings with a contemporary design then rings with a bezel setting are a popular choice. A bezel setting is a collar of metal that is slightly elevated above the gemstone. It is a very distinctive setting and it is the perfect choice for individuals who lead an active lifestyle and want to avoid having to take their engagement ring off regularly.
This striking setting offers much more protection than other elevated designs, such as the prong setting. It is a bolder setting which makes diamond engagement rings more noticeable.
Some people mistakenly believe that the bezel setting can obstruct diamonds, which can cause the stone to seem less brilliant. Most of the light that hits a diamond enters via the top (otherwise known as the diamond’s table) so the glitter is not affected by this setting.
Most bezel settings provide great protection to the stone. The setting not only protects against damage and chips, but also prevents oil and dirt building up in the diamonds. It is the accumulations of dirt that can make a diamond seem cloudy.
As well as full bezel settings, there are partial bezel settings. These fashionable designs have a setting that arcs across just part of the stone, differing in length according to the size of stone and the preference of the designer. If you choose a partial bezel setting, it may not hold the stone quite as securely as the full bezel setting.
At Marlows we have a full range of diamond engagement rings with settings to suit all preferences.

The Perfect Diamond Shape
Posted on: February 9th, 2010
The shape of diamonds is one of the most important factors when buying diamond engagement rings. It can have a considerable impact on the design of the ring. There are many shapes to choose from, so if you are choosing an engagement ring on behalf of your bride-to-be you may wish to know what her preference is. You should possibly consider that the shape of diamond can complement the type of ring.
The diversity of diamond shapes
There is a wide range of diamond shapes for a bride-to-be to choose from. Starting on the search for beautiful diamond engagement rings can be an exciting experience. The plethora of shapes available includes marquise, pear, princess, oval, emerald, round princess, heart and radiant.
Many people have a preference for a particular diamond shape. This may be a leaning towards the classically elegant round gem or the stunningly sophisticated emerald shape, for instance. Even the whimsically romantic heart shape has its fans. Although personal taste is a considerable factor in choosing a diamond engagement ring there are other considerations to take into account to ensure you find a lovely ring.
Diamond geometry
The geometry of a diamond is pivotal as a stone can be affected adversely by being poorly proportioned. Internal shadows can also prove problematic.
Accent stones
The accent stones can also have a bearing on the shape of the central stone. For example, an elongated central diamond will look more impressive with accent stones.
At Marlows we can guide you to find the perfect diamonds for your engagement rings.

The Perfect Setting For Your Diamonds – Part 2
Posted on: January 21st, 2010
Setting out to find the perfect diamond engagement rings for your sweetheart can be a daunting task. There is so much to know about the quality of diamonds, the type of metal to set the diamonds in to and the actual shape and setting of those diamonds.
When it comes to the settings there is a dizzying amount of choice available to you and it’s best to start out with some sort of idea about what your fiancé really likes so that you can focus on those types of settings. However there are more settings becoming popular due to fashions and trends so try to keep an open mind.
The traditional styles of setting include solitaire settings and accent stone settings. Here are some more to consider when choosing that all important ring:
Three stone settings
Engagement rings with three stones are felt to be nostalgic rings. Each of the diamonds set there represents the past, the present and the future. The setting is in a straight line with no extra accent stones. To make the ring more personal people choose to select the three diamonds themselves.
Bridal sets
It is also an option to buy engagement rings with matching wedding rings. The wedding rings can be bought in solid gold along with a solitaire engagement ring to complement it. Alternatively you may find both the wedding rings and engagement rings with a side stone setting instead.
At Marlows we have an extensive range of diamonds and diamond engagement rings to choose from.

The Perfect Setting For Your Diamonds – Part 1
Posted on: January 20th, 2010
Choosing the perfect setting for diamond engagement rings can be a hard and long-winded task. There are so many settings to choose from and an ever-increasing number of designs are becoming popular. Here is a quick overview of the most popular settings available:
Solitaires
Solitaire diamond engagement rings are the archetypal engagement rings. They have one single, elegant diamond at the centre. The diamonds can come in many shapes including marquise, heart, oval, pear, emerald and round for example. There is a wide choice of settings including channel, flush, bezel, prong and tiffany to name but a few. If you are unsure as to what your fiancé would prefer then its best to go window shopping so you can get an overall idea of what she would like. If you want to keep everything secret for the perfect surprise then it’s wise to enlist the help of her close friends and family.
Settings for accent stones
Side stones or accent stones are settings where there is a large centre stone and this is then flanked by many smaller stones which add further sparkle and design to the engagement ring band. Often accent stones are set into a channel setting which reduces the possibility of loss or damage through wear and tear. Other engagement rings come with settings of round stones and rectangles or baguettes, trilliums or round stones only.
At Marlows we have a breathtaking range of both engagement rings and wedding rings. Our selection of diamonds is second to none.

Which Metal To Choose When Buying Engagement Rings
Posted on: January 18th, 2010
There are so many decisions to make when buying diamond engagement rings, from the diamonds to the metal and the type of setting. There are three main choices available for metal choice and these are yellow gold, white gold or platinum. Before you start your search its worthwhile understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each:
Yellow gold
This is possibly the most common of all the metals used and has been used traditionally for many years, both in engagement rings and wedding rings. Pure gold is 24 carat gold whereas 18 carat gold is 25 per cent alloy. You’ll find most engagement rings and wedding rings are offered in 14 or 18 carat gold. The downside to gold is that it will show general wear and tear such as scratches and nicks, but these can be repaired easily.
White gold
White gold has the same standards as yellow gold but it has been treated so that it has a white appearance similar to silver. The finish will wear off over time and must be reapplied on a regular basis. However white gold makes a good choice if you want an individual ring to match other jewellery.
Platinum
This is the strongest of the metals and is much rarer. It does not wear easily and is less easily damaged, but if you do have a problem it can be much more difficult to repair. It is also more expensive.

Rings When They Get Too Tight For Comfort
Posted on: January 13th, 2010
Your fingers are unlikely to stay the same size during your lifetime and there will be times when you’ll find it difficult to remove your beloved engagement rings. When all the tried and tested methods of removal have failed, how can wedding rings and engagement rings be saved and what must you avoid trying in case you damage your ring in the process?
If you’ve tried all the recommended means of removing the ring then you’ll need to get a physician to remove the band by carefully cutting through the metal. Don’t be tempted to try the following ideas as you will ruin your rings:
Things to avoid
Don’t be tempted to use butter, oil, petroleum jelly or any other heavy lubricants to remove engagement rings. These substances can clog up the setting and dull the diamonds. They are also exceptionally difficult to clean.
Make sure you never pull the elevated setting in rings as this can lead to warping or bends in the metal which can again harm any diamonds or cause them to fall out.
Never try to cut a ring off without professional help as only a minute miscalculation can cause serious injury.
Once removed you need to make sure it doesn’t get so tight again. The best option might be to get it resized. If resizing isn’t plausible think about wearing it on another finger or passing it on to a relative as a cherished heirloom.
Here at Marlows we have a selection of diamond engagement rings to choose from.

Tricks For Removing Stubborn Engagement Rings
Posted on: January 12th, 2010
During your lifetime there will be times when your beautiful engagement rings become too tight or your wedding rings start to dig into your finger. There are many reasons for this, from weight gain or injury to illness but there are many ways that the ring can be loosened without damaging it.
If you don’t always take your engagement rings or wedding rings off you may find when you do come to remove them it’s not quite as easy to do as it used to be. Here are some great tips for easing stubborn rings off without damaging the engagement rings or resulting in a costly repair:
Tip 1 – wiggle the ring back and forth rather than trying to pull the ring straight off
Tip 2 – raise your hand above your head for a while which will reduce the blood flow to your hand and help to decrease the finger size
Tip 3 – immerse your hand in cold water which will automatically restrict the circulation. By keeping your hand wet it can be easier to remove the ring.
Tip 4 – water can be used as a lubricant to pull the ring off or, alternatively, use soap or body wash as a slippery substance
Tip 5 – take a minute to relax your hand before you attempt to pull the ring off. Tight muscles make it more difficult to remove
Tip 6 – If you have a couple of rings on one finger remove them one at a time if they are not soldered together
At Marlows we have a great range of diamond engagement rings and wedding rings.
